A Quantum Connection Between ‘Ant-Man’ & ‘Doctor Strange’

It turns out, the Marvel Cinematic Universe offered a peek at its multiverse earlier than expected with 2015's Ant-Man.

It turns out, the Marvel Cinematic Universe offered a peek at its multiverse earlier than expected. Last November’s Doctor Strange was a magical trip into the weeds of the alternate dimensions but 2015’s Ant-Man contained the first with its portrayal of the Quantum Realm. It was the first inkling of realities other than our own, some so small as to be unseen and others too massive to comprehend.

On the director’s commentary for Doctor Strange (via CinemaBlend), director Scott Derrickson confirmed the Quantum Realm’s return in the sequence when the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) gives Strange a serious head-trip. The blue, crystallized dimension passes by Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange as he whips through the multiverse at breakneck speed. Check out the image from the Quantum Realm’s brief appearance right below.

Previously, the original Wasp Janet van Dyne was lost to the Quantum Realm while disabling a nuke with her husband Hank Pym aka Ant-Man (played by Michael Douglas), traumatizing himself and their daughter Hope. He believed her dead until his apprentice Scott Lang (played by Paul Rudd) returned from the Quantum Realm at the climax of Peyton Reed’s Ant-Man. It’s heavily implied the sequel Ant-Man and the Wasp will refer not only to Hope’s ascension to the role, as per the post-credits scene in the first film, but also the return of her mother Janet. Expect more of the Quantum Realm in that 2018 film.

Doctor Strange is out on Digital HD and will be released on Blu-ray February 28th. The good doctor can next been seen in both Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War, leaving his proposed solo sequel for 2020 at the earliest.
