Rachel Taylor, who plays Trish on Marvel and Netflix's Jessica Jones, has spoken about the possibility of seeing Hellcat in the future.
Rachel Taylor, who plays Trish on the show, has spoken about the possibility of seeing Hellcat in the future. As far as she is concerned, a great deal of Trish’s urge to become a superhero will stem from her relationship with Jessica. More specifically, it will arise out of her jealousy of Jessica’s powers.
“I think for Trish, part of her shadow personality is that there’s a certain covetous part of her. I think she covets some of the things that Jessica has. I think there is an unholy ambition that sits just under the surface.
She declares it in the show. Jessica says, ‘What else could you possibly want Trish?’ And Trish says, ‘Well, to save the world, of course.’ Which is kind of a very unusual thing for a character to say. I do think there’s a part of her that would love to make it right in the way that she thinks Jessica could make it right if she was just to overcome her dysfunctions and put down the bottle.”
But Trish wants to save more than just the world. As Rachel Taylor sees it, Trish doesn’t just covet the idea of what Jessica could do without her dysfunctions—she also wants to save Jessica from the life she is living. The only question is how she might go about doing it.
“That’s a double-edged sword. That’s not always a very healthy thing to have within a friendship. To want to try and save someone, that’s really not our business. But I think Trish thinks it is her business. I’m intrigued to see where that leads her, how far she’ll take it.”
While Rachel Taylor appears to believe that becoming Hellcat could be a natural part of Trish’s character arc, she doesn’t want to get too far ahead of herself. Those who have seen the first season of Jessica Jones have seen numerous hints that this may be possible, but it’s far from confirmed for the second season. And while Taylor may love to see it happen, she’s also quite happy with what she already has.
“I already feel like I have more than my share, in a way, being on Netflix, being in the Marvel Universe, being in this show that has resonated so deeply with people. But of course, I mean, it would be amazing. I mean, it’s already a privilege to play a history that has so much lineage within the Marvel Universe. And to take that one step further is something that, yeah, I’d love to get my teeth stuck into whatever happens to the character.”
Of course, Hellcat’s inclusion on Jessica Jones could also mean much more. With Avengers: Infinity War set to feature a bevy of superheroes, many have speculated that Marvel’s Netflix characters might make it to the big screen. This is another thing that Rachel Taylor would like to see for her character, but she won’t be disappointed if it doesn’t happen.
“I mean, I don’t know if that’s going to happen, but I’m incredibly humbled to be a part of the Marvel Universe at all. They have such a great history as well of really taking a risk on actors. They pick people that they want and they just kind of go and do it. I mean, this is the most exciting part of my career. This is a game-changer for me. I’m really lucky. I owe them my professional life, in a way, I really think.”
With Hellcat having just received a brand new solo comic last month, this wouldn’t be the worst time in the world for Marvel to start generating increased interest in the character by including her in a popular Netflix series. If they decide to do so, it sounds like Rachel Taylor is more than down to wear the costume.
Season 2 of Jessica Jones currently has no set release date, but stay tuned for more Daredevil on March 18 and Luke Cage at some point later this year. Iron Fist and The Defenders are not expected until 2017 at the earliest.
