Back in 2000, director Bryan Singer brought the X-Men to the big screen in not one, but two hit films. The director eventually parted ways with the studio and didn’t direct the third installment of the X-Men franchise to instead pursue Superman Returns. Over the years, many sexual assault allegations have been made towards Bryan Singer and it’s made the director a very controversial topic in recent years, most notably this year because he directed the Oscar-nominated biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.
At least, he directed part of it. During filming for Bohemian Rhapsody, Bryan Singer was fired from the director’s chair and was replaced by Dexter Fletcher, though the X-Men director remains the credited director on the film. Actor Rami Malek, who plays Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, recently commented on the accusations when talking to The Hollywood Reporter‘s Scott Feinberg during the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
“My heart goes out to anyone who has to live through anything like what I’ve heard and what is out there. It’s awful, it’s remarkable that this happens, I can appreciate so much what they’ve been through and how difficult this must be for them. In the light of the #MeToo era that this somehow seems to exist after, it’s a horrible thing.”
Rami Malek then went on to discuss his personal relationship with Bryan Singer, which apparently was not a good one. Along with Bohemian Rhapsody earning a nomination for Best Motion Picture of the Year, Rami Malek is also nominated for his performance as the Queen singer.
“I’ve sat here and talked about how everyone deserves a voice and anyone who wants to talk about what happened with Bryan deserves to have their voice heard. In my situation with Bryan, it was not pleasant, not at all. And that’s about what I can say about it at this point.
Despite the allegations against Bryan Singer, the director is still set to helm the upcoming adaptation of the comic book Red Sonja. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all news regarding the controversial story as soon as more information becomes available. What’s your opinion on Rami Malek’s comments?
