Rey’s Training In ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Will Differ From Luke’s

The Star Wars movies are known for having parallels to previous movies in the saga, and as such it’s not incredibly surprising to know that we’ll spend a part of Star Wars: The Last Jedi seeing how Rey learns more about the Force from Luke Skywalker. However, the training regimen she experiences will be significantly different than what Luke experienced on Dagobah with Yoda in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.

Vanity Fair has officially revealed that one of the major focuses of The Last Jedi‘s story is the relationship between Luke Skywalker and Rey, the mentor-student bond that will happen will be a significant part of the movie’s narrative. But director Rian Johnson has promised that the movie’s not going to retread of The Empire Strikes Back in this regard, as the circumstances that Rey will have to face are going to be considerably different than the ones that Luke faced decades before. Johnson said the following about this particular plot point:

“There’s a training element to it, but it’s not exactly what you would expect.”

Johnson was tight-lipped about what’s so different about Rey’s training for obvious reasons; however, he did hint that Luke changing significantly as a person since we saw him at the end of Return of the Jedi has a lot to do with why his own approach is worlds apart from the training he once received. Obviously, one shouldn’t go in expecting Luke to get a Yoda-like piggyback ride from Rey as a part of her training… Although Mark Hamill and Daisy Ridley certainly had fun with that idea behind the scenes.

Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi will rise on December 15, 2017. The movie’s cast includes Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke, Domhnall Gleeson as General Armitage Hux, Benicio Del Toro as “DJ”, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, and Jimmy Vee as R2-D2.
