Rian Johnson Confirms Creative Control On ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’

Director Rian Johnson has confirmed that he did have creative control on Star Wars: The Last Jedi following the exit of Lord and Miller from Han Solo.

Following the shocking revelation that Phil Lord and Chris Miller have been fired off of the upcoming Untitled Han Solo Star Wars Story, director Rian Johnson has confirmed that he did indeed have creative control on Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

The news of Lord and Miller’s exit took the Internet by storm last night as it was revealed that the directing duo had actually been fired from the project after repeatedly clashing since day one with President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy who did not approve of their shooting style as well as their process of interacting with the cast and crew.

In the past, Johnson — who not only directed the upcoming eighth installment of the Skywalker saga but wrote the script as well — has praised Lucasfilm and Kennedy for the creative freedom he was given to achieve his vision while Kennedy has regarded Johnson as one of the great filmmakers of our time, likening his use of visual storytelling to that of Steve Spielberg.

The director confirmed the level of his creative control when he responded to a fan on Twitter this morning who pointed out how “strange” it was that Lord and Miller were let go due to their pushback against Kennedy over creative control considering Johnson’s previous statements. As for Lord and Miller’s replacement, a director has yet to be announced, however, Ron Howard, Joe Johnston (The Rocketeer), and franchise veteran scribe Lawrence Kasdan are the frontrunners to take over in what could be an effort to keep the film on track for its May 2018 release date.
