‘Star Wars’: Rian Johnson Says ‘The Last Jedi’ Is Singular

'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' director Rian Johnson expresses that he believes that the term "Jedi" in the title is singular.

When the title for the Rian Johnson-directed Star Wars: Episode VIII was officially announced as The Last Jedi back in January, fans online speculated whether or not the term “Jedi” was either singular or plural.

Many argued that the title was referring to the entire Jedi order and whether or not it would be restored now that we have Rey (Daisy Ridley ) in the picture. Others have speculated that the title was a direct reference to our original hero Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). As Master Yoda said to Luke in Return of the Jedi, “When gone I am, the last of the Jedi you will be.”

The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson spoke with ABC News, in which he was asked about whether or not “Jedi” was a singular or plural term. Johnson gave an interesting answer:

It’s so funny when people started asking that when the title was announced because I never even pondered that question… In my mind its singular.

They say in The Force Awakens that he’s gone on to find the last Jedi temple. Luke is the last Jedi.

“The Last Jedi” was also featured in the opening crawl text of The Force Awakens.

Johnson could easily be misdirecting the fans with this comment, but it wouldn’t be surprising if the title was indeed referring to Luke. The entirety of The Force Awakens was predicated on the search for the now legendary Jedi. After all, the first four words in the crawl text were “Luke Skywalker has vanished.”

What do you guys think? Is Johnson’s claim about the title of the film correct? Sound off in the comments below, and be sure to continue following Heroic Hollywood for more news coming out of Star Wars Celebration Orlando this weekend.

Directed by Rian Johnson and starring Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwnedoline Christie, Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern and Kelly Marie Tran, Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in our galaxy on December 15, 2017.
