‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Director On How He Kept Spoilers From Leaking

It seems like it’s getting harder and harder to go into a film these days without something being spoiled. Spoiler culture has made it near impossible to check the internet when it comes to a film’s release but when it came to Star Wars: The Last Jedi, surprisingly most of the film’s big surprises stayed off the internet until after it hit theaters.

With today’s methods of stealing these secrets, it’s clear that you’ve got to find ways to keep them under wraps. Speaking with The Wall Street Journal, The Last Jedi writer-director Rian Johnson explained his simple method for keeping spoilers from making their way online.

“I typed Episode VIII out on a MacBook Air. For security it was “air-gapped”—never connected to the internet. I carried it around and used it for nothing except writing the script. I kept it in a safe at Pinewood Studios. I think my producer was constantly horrified I would leave it in a coffee shop.”

It was quite refreshing going into a film like Star Wars: The Last Jedi where I knew almost nothing beforehand and I’m hoping more directors pay attention to what Rian Johnson did and perhaps use this method in the future. While I know there’s plenty of people out there who love spoilers, I do feel that movies are best when you know as little as possible about them. But perhaps that’s just me?
