‘The Last Jedi’ Director Rian Johnson Hopes His ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy Still Happens

The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson said he hopes his Star Wars trilogy is apart of Lucasfilm’s future plans.

Before the controversy of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it was announced that Rian Johnson would be developing his own Star Wars trilogy. Rian Johnson was set to write a new Star Wars trilogy set outside of the Skywalker Saga. Another Star Wars film series was later announced with Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. After The Rise of Skywalker, three Star Wars release dates are currently set for 2022, 2024, and 2026.

Bob Iger also confirmed that the first film in 2022 will come from Benioff and Weiss. This has left Star Wars fans speculating on when we could see Rian Johnson’s film. Another wrinkle in all of this is Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige, who is now producing his own Star Wars film. Despite The Last Jedi backlash, Rian Johnson seemed pretty confident that his film would happen. In a recent interview with BANG Showbiz, The Last Jedi‘s Rian Johnson said that Lucasfilm is still figuring out their upcoming slate:

“Well, we’ll see. I’m still talking to Lucasfilm, they’re figuring out what they’re doing and we’ll see what happens, But I’d be thrilled if it happens, and I’m working on my own stuff too.”

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be released in theaters on December 20, 2019.
