Robert Downey Jr. Recalls One Of The Last Times He Worked With Stan Lee

Robert Downey Jr. fondly remembers one of the final times he worked with the late Marvel Comics icon Stan Lee.

Towards the end of Captain America: Civil War, Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man receives a package from a delivery man played by Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee. While the scene was just one of the many to feature a Stan Lee cameo appearance, Robert Downey Jr. revealed why he has fond memories of this sequence in particular.

During his appearance on The Howard Stern show, Robert Downey Jr. explained that the Captain America scene was one of the last times he would see Stan Lee before he passed away in 2018. However, the scene was particularly memorable because it was while working on the sequence that Robert Downey Jr. realized Stan Lee thought of him as Iron Man:

“That was one of the last times I saw him and the crazy thing was, he said on the first take, he nailed it. And they go, ‘alright, resetting. Let’s do it again.’ And after that he started he started saying, ‘I have a package for Robert…” And I said, ‘on my God’. It’s wild. Even the guy who created the character thinks of me in a moment where he’s taking about the character and I go, ‘this is so meta.’ Stan Lee is forgetting who I am in this moment.”

Stan Lee’s cameo appearance as an anti-war man from the ’70s in Avengers: Endgame would be his final role in a Marvel Studios film.
