Paramount’s ‘Snake Eyes’ Film Enlists ‘RED’ Director Robert Schwentke

TheWrap reports Paramount Pictures has tapped RED director Robert Schwentke to direct Paramount and Allspark Pictures’ upcoming Snake Eyes film, a spin-off based on the GI Joe universe.

Evan Spiliotopoulos wrote the first draft of the script. It follows the origins of Snake Eyes where he attempts to join the Arashikage Clan in Japan. The ninja clan itself is a group of shadowy assassins who used deception to earn their keep and develop a reputation for performing the impossible.

Spiliotopoulos is best known for writing Disney’s live-action remake of the animated classic Beauty and the Beast and The Huntsman: Winter’s War.

The Snake Eyes spin-off was first revealed back in May with Brian Goldner producing the project. Paramount Pictures and Hasbro had previously assembled a writers room led by Akiva Goldsman in the spring of 2016 to develop a cinematic universe based on toyline properties Micronauts, Visionaries and M.A.S.K., as well as reboot the GI Joe franchise following 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and 2013’s G.I Joe: Retaliation which featured Ray Park in the role of the Snake Eyes character.

The film is currently slated to hit theaters March 27, 2020. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the future of the GI Joe franchise at Paramount as we learn it.
