'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' dominates the holiday box office; 'Passengers' falls behind and 'Assassin's Creed' does even worse.
In second place is Illumination Entertainment’s animated Sing. The family film brought in a solid $7.8 million on Christmas Eve and is estimated to gross a total of $51-$54 million for the four-day weekend. Adding in the six-day holiday numbers (the film opened on Wednesday), the animated film will gross an estimated $71-$75 million.
Although the sci-fi film, Passengers, and the video game adaptation, Assassin’s Creed, also opened on Wednesday, December 21, they both haven’t done very well at the box office.
Passengers, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, took in $2.8 million on Saturday, bringing its four-day gross total to an estimated $20 million and rises to $27 million when including the six-day totals. However, Sony estimated the film to open with $30-$40 million, so it has so far been a disappointment. The film cost around $120 million to make and banked on its lead cast to bring in audiences. The overall negative critical reception hasn’t helped.
Assassin’s Creed made $2.2 million on Christmas Eve and is estimated to make $22-$23 million once the holiday weekend is over. The film, which stars Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, hasn’t garnered a positive reception from critics, either. And rounding out the top five is the James Franco and Bryan Cranston comedy film, Why Him?, is estimated to make $14 million for the four-day weekend.
