‘Rogue One’ Dominates New Year’s Box Office; ‘Passengers’ Still Lagging Behind

Because everyone was very ready to wish 2016 goodbye and to welcome 2017 with open arms, the movie box office saw a bit of a slow down this weekend. Regardless, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story marked its third week at number one, grossing an estimated $14.5 million on Saturday. It has now surpassed the $400 million mark domestically and is currently number two behind Finding Dory, which has made $486.3 million, for biggest releases in 2016.

Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One is estimated to gross around $65 million over the course of the four-day holiday weekend and raising the aforementioned domestic number to $440 million. The standalone Star Wars film has now surpassed Captain America: Civil War, which has grossed $408.1 million, domestically.

Holding its spot at number two is Illumination Entertainment’s Sing, which starred the voice cast of Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, and Seth MacFarlane. The animated film grossed $12.2 million on Saturday and is estimated to make $53.7 million over the holiday weekend and gives the film a big boost to a pretty solid $178 million domestically.

In third place is the not-well-received Passengers. The Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence film made $4.6 million on Friday, grossing around $20 million for the weekend and a domestic gross total of $65 million. The movie cost around $110-$120 million to make so it’s still lagging behind for Sony’s liking.

Disney’s Moana is still in the top five, landing at number four with a gross total of $13.5 million over the weekend. This pushes the film to $212 million domestically. Rounding out the top five is Denzel Washington’s Fences, also starring Viola Davis. The film opened wide on Christmas Day and is expected to make $12-$13 million over the four-day weekend.
