On a global scale, Rogue One has also surpassed other Star Wars films. It beat out Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and comes in in third place behind Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, which grossed $848.8 million at the global box office, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which has taken in a massively impressive $2 billion worldwide.
While Rogue One is doing phenomenally well, it may not come close to dethroning The Force Awakens. Still, it’s a very good sign that it’s amassed such high numbers in a relatively short period of time. The film was critically acclaimed and was also well-received by audiences everywhere.
Now that Lucasfilm is also owned by Disney, Rogue One is in the studio’s top five grossing films of all time. Coming in at number four for Disney, the eighth Star Wars film sits behind only Finding Dory, The Avengers, and The Force Awakens. The Gareth Edwards film has beaten out Avengers: Age of Ultron.
As Rogue One continues its run in theaters domestically and worldwide (it opened in China recently), we’ll see if it can surpass any other films.
