According to Dread Central, Ron Perlman recently talked about the state of the Hellboy movie franchise at the Motor City Comic Con. He noted that Hellboy 3 was intended to tie up loose ends and wrap up the trilogy:
“The third one was meant to be epic and conclusive and a resolve for all these, almost, Greek oracle promises of the destiny of Hellboy. It would’ve made for a really good movie, I think.”
While we’ll never see a live-action movie based around what they originally planned, perhaps there’s a chance that we could see the movie in some other format like animation. Even though he’s not going to play the character in live-action anymore in spite of campaigning hard with director Guillermo Del Toro for a third one, Perlman praised David Harbour (his replacement for the reboot Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen).
“David Harbour is a good dude. I wish him nothing but the best when it comes to the retooling of [Hellboy].”
It’s certainly bittersweet to know that the Guillermo Del Toro trilogy will never see a true resolution, but at the least it seems as though Perlman has made peace with it and will enjoy the next Hellboy movie as a fan.
Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen is slated for a 2018 release date. The film will star David Harbour as Anung Un Rama (Hellboy).
