Rosario Dawson Joins HBO Max & Ava DuVernay’s ‘DMZ’ Pilot

Deadline reports that Rosario Dawson has been cast as the lead in the pilot for HBO Max and Ava DuVernay’s DMZ.

Based on the DC Comics series of the same name, the DMZ pilot will star Rosario Dawson as Alma Ortego, a medic who embarks on a journey to search for her lost son while saving lives along the way. Ava DuVernay will helm the HBO Max series, which comes from Warner Bros. Television, and also serves as an executive producer alongside showrunner Roberto Patino.

Published under DC’s Vertigo imprint, the comic book series takes place in the near future during a second American civil war that had turned Manhattan into a demilitarized zone. With the city now destroyed and isolated from the rest of the world, Rosario Dawson’s Alma Ortego will find herself in conflicts with gangs, militias, warlord, and many more threats as she becomes an unlikely source of hope for everyone.

Ava DuVernay will produce DMZ under her Array Filmworks in association with Warner Bros. Television. The HBO Max series is the second DC project involving Ava DuVernay, who is currently co-writing the New Gods film she is set to direct.

Rosario Dawson is also no stranger to comic book properties, having appeared Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City film and the sequel titled Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. Furthermore, Rosario Dawson portrayed Claire Temple in the Marvel and Netflix shows Daredevil, Iron Fist, The Defenders and Luke Cage.
