Ruby Rose was announced last summer to play Kate Kane aka Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the Gotham’s criminal resurgence. The actress will be the first openly gay superhero to lead a live-action series.
While Ruby Rose made her debut in the Arrowverse last year in during the Elseworld’s crossover event last year which featured Green Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl visiting Gotham City after learning about the machinations of an Arkham Asylum doctor across the episodes, the pilot which is currently being filmed will, in fact, be set before the events of the Elseworlds crossover.
Speaking with Deadline at the INTV conference in Jerusalem, Israel, Berlanti confirmed that the Batwoman pilot “origin story that we set up predates the crossover; it’s a story prior to the crossover” featuring The Flash, Supergirl, and Arrow.
Marcos Siena is directing the pilot from a script written by Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries). Greg Berlanti is producing the project along with Berlanti Productions’ Sarah Schechter, Dries, and Geoff Johns serving executive producers. Elseworlds used Chicago to double as Gotham in the crossover but will be utilizing Vancouver for production on Batwoman’s solo series. Production on the pilot is currently underway.
Batwoman was first introduced in Detective Comics back in 1956 as Kathy Kane. She was one of the first vigilantes to make up the “Batman Family.” The character was reimagined for DC’s New 52 as Kate Kane, a Jewish lesbian who protects Gotham City as Batwoman.
An ex-soldier who was raised by her obsessive father, Kate Kane picked up the Batwoman mantle separate from her cousin’s decision to fight crime in Gotham. She has no problem putting herself in harm’s way to protect others and she’s also an intelligent tactician who will challenge Oliver Queen for the top slot in Arrow‘s Justice League.
Here’s the series’ official logline:
Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence.
Batwoman stars Ruby Rose, Dougray Scott, Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Camrus Johnson, and Nicole Kang.
