Live-Action ‘Rugrats’ Movie Starring CG Children Announced

America’s favorite babies Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, and Angelica are back as Paramount announces a live-action Rugrats movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount has contacted Diary of A Wimpy Kid director David Bowers to helm the new live-action Rugrats movie with CG child stars.

David Bowers is no stranger to working with live-action and CG actors. Bowers began his feature film career on 1988’s Who Framed Roger Rabbit with Robert Zemeckis. One of the best films to mesh together living actors with CG counterparts, much like Space Jam did years later with Michael Jordan and the Looney Tunes back in 1996.

Bowers’ Diary of A Wimpy Kid was so successful that the studio greenlit multiple follow up sequels to the franchise including Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul.

The Rugrats live action movie is part of Paramount’s new master plan to reboot old well-known properties for this generation. Dora the Explorer will also be getting a live-action film with Dora and the Lost City of Gold and an older Are You Afriad of the Dark? will see it’s rebirth on the big screen as well.

The Rugrats television series was a huge hit back in the 90’s. The kids television show aired exclusively on the Nickelodeon network back in 1991 and ran up until 2004 with 9 seasons and 172 episodes under it’s belt.

In 1998, their first feature film The Rugrats Movie hit theaters, tripling it’s budget and raking in over $140 Million at the box office. It’s commercial success warranted two sequels, Rugrats In Paris: The Movie in 2000 and Rugrats Go Wild in 2003.
