Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street) was revealed last year to be writing the script for the Supergirl film which will feature an origin story for Superman’s cousin Kara Zor El. According to Hughes, Kara Zor-El is potentially going to carry the Kryptonian banner on the silver screen solo for some time:
The possibility of Supergirl dominating on the big screen could be a result of how popular the Arrowverse and DC are on Television. Fans are looking forward to seeing different DC characters to shown and represented and maybe Warner Bros. and DC are finally realizing that these characters are successful on TV for a reason. Melissa Benoist’s Supergirl has joined shows like Arrow or The Flash to positive critical reception and fans keep asking for more. Ruby Rose’s Batwoman is also a testament to that success. DC’s expansion with their streaming platform DC Universe shows capitalizing on lesser-known superheroes has already paid off.
That said, the state of affairs of the Justice League members’ films, Wonder Woman aside, may also be a reason to explain why other DC superheroes are being considered to jump on the silver screen. Especially regarding Henry Cavill’s Superman. With no news about the next Man of Steel on the horizon and Cavill focusing on other projects like Netflix’s The Witcher, maybe its time for other characters to take the spotlight.
