‘The Runaways’ Showrunner On Possible Connections To The MCU

Marvel’s The Runaways showrunner, Josh Schwartz, recently discussed the possible connections between the upcoming Hulu show and the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. Speaking with IGN, Schwartz made it a point to clarify that whether “it does” or doesn’t connect to the MCU isn’t up to him, but that The Runaways will be “independent” of all of the other Marvel-owned properties out there.

“Yeah. How it connects or whether it does or not, we’ll leave that to the powers that be. I can just tell you that we were very capable of telling the story that we wanted to tell independent of any of the other Marvel stories that are out there.”

When Schwartz was asked what he thought of the possible connection between The Runaways and Doctor Strange by way of character Tina Minoru, Nico’s mother. The character of Tina never actually ended up appearing in Doctor Strange and Schwartz confirms that there is still no connection despite the shared character.

“She was only named in the credits so it’s nothing that really affects us.”

Marvel’s Runaways stars Rhenzy Feliz (Teen Wolf, Casual) as Alex Wilder, Lyrica Okano (The Affair) as Nico Minoru, Virginia Gardner (Little Bitches) as Karolina Dean, Ariela Barer (New Girl) as Gert Yorkes, Gregg Sulkin (Faking It) as Chase Stein and Allegra Acosta (100 Things to do Before High School) as Molly Hernandez.

The series also stars the villainous group The Pride which consists of Kip Pardue (ER) as Frank Dean, Ryan Sands (The Wire) as Geoffrey Wilder, Angel Parker (The People v. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story) as Catherine Wilder, Brittany Ishibashi (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows) as Tina Minoru, James Yaegashi (Madame Secretary) as Robert Minoru, Kevin Weisman (Alias) as Dale Yorkes, Brigid Brannagh (Army Wives) as Stacey Yorkes, Annie Wersching (The Vampire Diaries) as Leslie Dean, James Marsters (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as Victor Stein and Ever Carradine (The Handmaids Tale) as Janet Stein.

The series will premiere on Hulu on November 21, 2017.
