Rupert Wyatt Reveals ‘Fantastic Four’ Is To Blame For ‘Gambit’ Delay

Rupert Wyatt reveals that the reason fans never got to see he and Channing Tatum’s Gambit movie is the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot.

Josh Trank’s follow-up to Chronicle was a reboot to the Fantastic Four film franchise and it resulted in one of the most infamous comic book adaptations in recent memory. From heavy reshoots to rumored on-set chaos, to Michael B. Jordan playing Johnny Storm, to a trailer that featured a dark tone, fans across the internet were upset but quite a few of the film’s additions to the canon. The film was a massive box office flop when it released in August 2015, only one year before Suicide Squad would break records in that same slot and one year after the first Guaridans of the Galaxy ruled that time frame.

At the time, 20th Century Fox also had a Gambit movie in development with Channing Tatum set to star as the titular X-Men hero and Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt at the helm. In a recent interview with The Beat, Rupert Wyatt revealed that it was Fantastic Four‘s failure that eventually led to him leaving the Gambit film.

“I was very close with Channing Tatum and his producing partner Reid Carolin, and I was on the script with him and Josh Zetumer as a writer. We were close, I believe 10 weeks away. It simply came down to budget. There was not enough. You know all too well about the politics of the business. Fantastic Four had been released by Fox a month before and had not gone well for them, so our budget was slashed quite considerably.

The inevitable, from my perspective was, ‘Well then we need to rewrite the script to tailor to our budget’, but we were too close to a start date for Fox to really want to go there, so unfortunately, it just didn’t work out. All I know is Channing had a really, really wonderful idea for what the film could and should be. I know he and Reid are still plugging away at it, so I hope in the new Disney era that then they get to make it.”

We’ll be sure to keep you updated on all news regarding Channing Tatum’s Gambit movie as soon as more information becomes available. Do you wish Rupert Wyatt could have directed the Gambit movie?
