Ryan Reynolds’ ‘Detective Pikachu’ Expected To Electrify May Box Office

Ryan Reynolds’ Detective Pikachu is expected to earn big bucks at the box office in May due to Pokemon’s immense popularity.

According to a report from Box Office Pro, Detective Pikachu‘s opening weekend is ranging around  $75 million+. The report delves deeper into why the film has a lot of great things going for it but may be affected by a couple from the time frame of the film’s release, the popularity of both Ryan Reynolds and the Pokemon brand.

Pokemon began in 1996 as a pair of video games by Nintendo for the Game Boy known as Pokemon Red and Blue. This brand then took off with small stories or manga that soon lead to home screens through the Pokemon animated series that has spawned animated films and more television shows. Pokemon became a hit and most notably its face to lead the brand became Pikachu.

Now, Detective Pikachu has done the same with its first trailer that wowed many fans and audiences with its live-action take on the famous pocket monster with Ryan Reynolds as the voice. The social media activity for Pokemon appears to have increased since the first trailer which may be a good sign for the film.

With the recent success from Deadpool 2, there is little doubt Ryan Reynolds will help bring more audiences to see Detective Pikachu. Ryan Reynolds has become a huge celebrity among fans around the world with his charismatic and spot-on take of the “Merc With A Mouth”, which he originated in 2009’s X-Men: Origins: Wolverine before the character earned two critically-acclaimed solo movies.

What do you think about these box office numbers for Detective Pikachu? Are you looking forward to seeing the world of Pokemon in a live action film? Share your thoughts below!

The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.

Directed by Rob Letterman from a script co-written with Nicole Perlman, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular pocket monster, Justice Smith as Tim, Kathryn Newton as Lucy, and Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe as Lt. Yoshida.

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu will be released in theaters on May 10, 2019.
