Deadpool Creator Thinks Ryan Reynolds Returning To ‘Green Lantern’ Is Smart Move

Could it be time to see Ryan Reynolds put the Merc with the Mouth on hold for a moment to return to the Green Lantern Corps? Well, the creator of Deadpool seems to think so. Rob Liefeld has shared nothing but praise for Reynolds since he’s fully embodied the character of Deadpool and continues to do so to this day. However, Liefeld’s a very opinionated comic creator as well and he took to his Twitter yesterday to conjure up memories of another comic role that Reynolds once embodied.

You remember. Long before we got a new take on Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds took on the role of Hal Jordan in 2011’s Green Lantern film. At this point, you had the Christopher Nolan Batman films and the early stages of the MCU giving us different takes on comic book properties. And yet Green Lantern felt very by the numbers. Since then, Reynolds has found new life and success as Wade Wilson in the Deadpool films and it’s fair to say that he’s fully embracing that role much more than that of Hal Jordan.

So would Ryan Reynolds ever reprise that role again? Especially when he’s deeply entrenched in the Deadpool films? Probably not. But that didn’t stop Rob Liefeld’s wishful thinking, as the creator tweeted yesterday that he “would love to see Ryan return as Green Lantern. I think it would receive positive reactions. The end credits to Deadpool 2 notwithstanding. Could be massive, just sayin.” Keeping in mind that, as far as movie canon is concerned, Deadpool killed Ryan Reynolds in the credits of Deadpool 2 to prevent Green Lantern from happening.

Here, have a look at Liefeld’s tweet encouraging the return of Reynolds as Hal Jordan:

It will probably be awhile before we see the DC Extended Universe’s take on another Hal Jordan with the Green Lantern Corps film. There’s no telling who will ultimately be cast in the role, but it’s safe to assume that Reynolds probably won’t be trading in Deadpool for Green Lantern anytime soon. His casting as Wade Wilson is still cited as one of the best things to happen for comic based films. No reason to give that up, after all.

Of course, it’s likely that a new Green Lantern film probably wouldn’t make the same mistakes of the previous one. Still, though, chances are that whenever wes see Hal Jordan on the silver screen again, it probably won’t be Ryan Reynolds. What do you think of Rob Liefeld’s thoughts, though? Do you think it would be a good idea to see Reynolds return as Green Lantern in the future? Or, perhaps, what if it wasn’t live-action, and he merely voiced Jordan in an animated feature? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

In the meantime, you can see Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with the Mouth in Deadpool 2, which is now available on home release.
