California Governor Casts Doubt On San Diego Comic-Con 2020 In July

It continues to look like San Diego Comic-Con 2020 will not happen in July after recent comments made by the Governor of California Gavin Newsom.

Many events have been delayed or outright canceled in recent months due to the coronavirus pandemic. There’s currently no clear answer on when things will return to normal, but it has put major events like San Diego Comic-Con up in the air. San Diego Comic-Con 2020 is still scheduled to take place at the end of July with organizers monitoring the situation closely. However, it’s likely that the convention will either be delayed or outright canceled.

This all comes from recent comments that were made by the Governor of California Gavin Newsom. AP reporter Kathleen Ronayne tweeted out Newsom’s comments on Tuesday regarding large scale events taking place this summer:

“The prospect of mass gatherings is negligible at best until we get to herd immunity and we get to a vaccine. Large scale events that bring in hundreds, thousand, tens of thousands of strangers..is not in the cards.”

Before the coronavirus started to change the world, it was speculated that San Diego Comic-Con 2020 was going to be a big year with Marvel Studios likely showing off The Eternals, Shang-Chi, and other Phase 4 projects with potential Phase 5 announcements. Meanwhile, it was also speculated that Warner Bros. was going to reveal a first look at Robert Pattinson’s The Batman, The Suicide Squad, Dune, and the third Fantastic Beasts film. Now that so many productions have been put on hold, the chances of major studios putting on presentations seems highly unlikely.

Another event that could be affected by these recent comments is Star Wars Celebration, which is scheduled to take place in Anaheim from August 27th to 30th.
