Scarlett Johansson Says Her Salary Is The Same As Her Male Marvel Co-Stars

Avengers and Black Widow star Scarlett Johansson said her Marvel salary is now on the same level as her male co-stars.

A decade after making her debut as Black Widow in Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 2, Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff will finally lead her own standalone film set before the character sacrificed herself in Avengers: Endgame. Considering Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow was a founding member of the Avengers and the actress has been involved in multiple MCU projects since her first appearance, fans might have expected her salary to be on par with her male Marvel co-stars.

Unfortunately, pay equity was not always the case during Scarlett Johansson’s time with Marvel Studios. However, Scarlett Johansson told The Hollywood Reporter that her salary is now on the same level of what her male co-stars received for their Marvel debuts:

“Money is a taboo topic of conversation. But I will say that, yes, I’m on an equal playing field with my male cohorts.”

Scarlett Johansson is reportedly earning $15 million for her work on Marvel Studios’ Black Widow, which is approximately what Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth received for their respective Marvel debuts.

Full plot details on Marvel Studios’ Black Widow are currently under wraps, though it has been revealed that the film is set after the events of Captain America: Civil War and will see Scarlett Johansson’s Nathasha Romanoff take on the villainous Taskmaster. The film will also mark the Marvel Cinematic Universe debut of Yelena Belova, the second modern-era character to use the Black Widow title in the comics.

Directed by Cate Shortland from a script written by Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle, and Rachel Weisz. Production is currently underway.

Black Widow will be released in theaters on May 1, 2020.
