‘The Shallows’ Director Top Choice To Direct ‘Suicide Squad’ Sequel

Non-Stop and The Shallows director Jaume Collet-Serra is being eyed by Warner Bros. as the frontrunner to direct the sequel to Suicide Squad.

The studio was previously in talks with Mel Gibson to helm the sequel to last year’s smash hit villainous team-up flick directed by David Ayer but WB is now interested in having Collet-Serra at the helm. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that script delays ultimately pushed back the production leading to Gibson moving on. According to the trades sources, a new script is being written based on a recently delivered treatment written byZak Penn (Avengers, Ready Player One). The studio is targeting a mid-2018 start for production.

The first Suicide Squad which featured the DCEU’s most dangerous super villains on a mission to save Midway City from a supernatural entity starred Will Smith and featured a breakout performance from Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.  The film managed to take a total of $745 million at the global box office. Both Smith and Robbie are expected to return for the sequel. The film also won an Oscar for Best Makeup at the 2017 Academy Awards.
