‘Shang-Chi’ Star Simu Liu Jokes About Leaving Marvel Role

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star Simu Liu jokes about leaving his Marvel role on April Fools Day.

Marvel Studios’ phase 4 line-up includes a feature film centered on the martial artist hero named Shang-Chi, who will be played by Kim’s Convenience star Simu Liu. Unfortunately, the film is one of the many projects forced to suspend production due to the ongoing coronavirus and Liu nearly delivered more bad news as an April Fools Day joke on his official Twitter account.

In the post, Simu Liu begins by telling fans that he has decided to part ways with Marvel over ‘creative differences.’ However, Liu stops himself before completing the statement, noting that this was intended to be an April Fools Day joke but the world has been through enough, a likely reference to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic currently affecting the planet.

You can check out Simu Liu’s post below.

Introduced in Special Marvel Edition #15 in December 1973, Shang-Chi is a skilled martial artist who was raised in an isolated compound located in China and trained by his father Fu Manchu, a Chinese crimelord and immortal sorcerer who repeatedly attempted to conquer the world. When Shang-Chi was finally allowed to venture into the outside world to do his father’s bidding, he learned about his father’s evil ways and faked his own death before embarking on a mission to take down Fu Manchu’s criminal empire.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script written by David Callaham, Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina and Tony Leung.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on February 12, 2021.
