‘Shang-Chi’ Star Simu Liu Congratulates Awkwafina On Golden Globes Win

Shang-Chi star Simu Liu took to Twitter to celebrate Awkwafina’s Golden Globes win after she starred in Lulu Wang’s The Farewell.

It’ll be sometime before Shang-Chi arrives in theaters, but Simu Liu is already excited to work with Awkwafina after congratulating the actress on her Golden Globes win. It isn’t clear who Awkwafina will be playing in Shang-Chi, but she joined the cast around the same time as Simu Liu and Tony Leung. Awkwafina previously explained that Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton was extremely passionate about the project.

Shang-Chi star Simu Liu tweeted some kind words to his Marvel co-star after Awkwafina’s Golden Globes win. She won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy Motion Picture for her performance in The Farewell. The Shang-Chi star began by noting Awkwafina’s real name Nora, before signing off the tweet with a touching note before saying he’ll see the actress at work, presumably when they begin production on the Marvel film.

In the comics, Shang-Chi is a skilled martial artist who was raised and trained by his father, who he soon learns is a Chinese crime lord and immortal sorcerer who repeatedly attempted to conquer the world, in an isolated compound located in China. When Shang-Chi was finally allowed to venture into the outside world in order to do his father’s bidding, he learned about his father’s evil ways and faked his own death before embarking on a mission to take down his father’s criminal empire.

Introduced in Special Marvel Edition #15 in December 197, Shang-Chi will reportedly modernize the source material in order to avoid the character stereotypes of the time. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film will star Simu Liu, Awkwafina and Tony Leung.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings opens in theaters on February 12, 2021.
