‘Shang-Chi’ Actor Simu Liu Shuts Down Troll Who Called Him Ugly

Simu Liu, who is set to play Shang-Chi, has a great response to a mean tweet over his physical appearance.

Kim’s Convenience star Simu Liu has been targeted for his physical appearance since he was cast as Shang-Chi, but he’s largely taken it in stride, since it seems that more people have actually complimented him on his appearance. In a recent display of his sense of humor, Simu Liu joked that looking in the mirror was something that made him shudder.

Simu Liu is expected to be a big part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward as key faces from the previous films are retiring from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (at least for now). Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings picks up plot points that have been hinted at in the early days of the MCU, and it’s likely that Shang-Chi will be one of the key faces that joins the next iteration of the Avengers (whenever they assemble).

In the comics, Shang-Chi is a skilled martial artist who was raised and trained by his father, who he soon learns is a Chinese crime lord and immortal sorcerer who repeatedly attempted to conquer the world, in an isolated compound located in China. When Shang-Chi was finally allowed to venture into the outside world in order to do his father’s bidding, he learned about his father’s evil ways and faked his own death before embarking on a mission to take down his father’s criminal empire.

Introduced in Special Marvel Edition #15 in December 197, Shang-Chi will reportedly modernize the source material in order to avoid the character stereotypes of the time. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film will star Simu Liu, Awkwafina and Tony Leung.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings opens in theaters on February 12, 2021.
