The Hollywood Reported revealed Levy’s exit from the film based on the highly successful video game franchise from Naughtydog as Levy shifts his attention to directing 20th Century Fox’s video game action-comedy Free Guy.
The film adaptation is set to be a prequel for the treasure hunter that takes influence from a sequence in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception as the story focuses on Nathan Drake and his first encounter with the fortune seeker and businessman Victor Sullivan aka Sully, who will later become a father figure to the adventurer.
Nathan Fillion was once rumored to star before Mark Wahlberg was in the mix with a script being developed by David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook) but the project has seen many filmmakers come and go since. Seth Gordon (Baywatch) and Neil Burger (Divergent) were once attached before Levy signed on to helm the film with a draft of the script penned by Joe Carnahan (The Grey). Carnahan described the script as an R-rated take that remained faithful to the adult language used in the games. But the studio opted to rework their take on the adaptation following a cut of the Spider-Man: Homecoming. A new writer was said to be sought after to chronicle a young Nathan as he grows into the adventure fans are familiar with. NaughtyDog is not involved with the project.
The studio will now look for a new director to take over the project.
Uncharted is being produced by Charles Roven, Avi Arad, Alex Gartner, and Ari Arad. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on Sony’s Uncharted adaptation as we learn it.
