‘Shazam!’ Director Brilliantly Explains Changes To Batman & Superman Costumes In Trailer

When actor Joshua Erenburg went to see Aquaman in IMAX, he walked out with questions and not all of them related to Warner Bros. and DC’s latest film.

During the trailer for the upcoming superhero film Shazam!, Joshua noticed a small discrepancy. The costumes featured on the action figures of Batman and Superman did not match the characters’ actual costumes from previous DCEU films. Concerned, Joshua tweeted the film’s director, David F. Sandberg:

“@ponysmasher Superman doesn’t wear the undies in the DCEU and that isn’t the DCEU Batman logo. So is this film outside of the universe? Is it being rebooted? Or…?”

Sandberg not only responded to Joshua’s inquiry but gave a perfectly nerdy, in-canon explanation for the minor changes:

“In the movie those toy designers all get fired for taking creative license. It’s a big plot point that sets up the villain of Shazam 2.”

You can check out the full exchange below:

As brilliant a response as it is, Sandberg’s tweet does not officially confirm or deny that Shazam! takes place in the same cinematic universe as Justice League or Man of Steel, though that part seems all but certain thanks to other Easter eggs and interviews.

As for Sandberg’s purposed sequel, there is only one question that needs answering: how many times would you pay to see a Shazam! movie where the titular hero must do battle with a disgruntled band of former toy makers? Twice? Thrice? Tell us in the comments below!

Shazam! will be released in theaters on April 5, 2019, and will be followed by Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on February 7, 2020, and Wonder Woman 1984 on June 5, 2020. A standalone Joker film set outside of the DC Films universe starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime is also set to hit theaters October 4, 2019.

Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the future of the DC Films franchise as we learn it.
