‘Shazam’ Director David F. Sandberg Is On Board For A Sequel

Shazam has yet to officially strike theaters, but director David F. Sandberg is already planning to return for the follow-up.

The news comes to us courtesy of ComicBook.com. The outlet scored an exclusive interview with Shazam director David F. Sandberg and producer Peter Safran in which both filmmakers made their intentions to return for the sequel clear.

When ComicBook poised the question of reprising their roles behind the camera for Shazam 2, Peter Safran answered first:

“It’s easy for me to say, ‘I’m on board.”

At this point, Safran turns to David F. Sandberg and asks him the same question. The director replied with:

“Let’s do it.”

It is important to keep in mind that Shazam has yet to hit theaters and an official sequel has yet to be announced by Warner Bros. That said, the David F. Sandberg film is receiving early critical praise from critics and fans alike, many of whom are already clamoring for a second outing from the team behind the film. Warner Bros. is riding that wave of buzz further with early fan screenings of the film in select theaters a full two weeks ahead of its wide release.

Here is a plot synopsis for Shazam:

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Ron Cephas.

Shazam! will be released in theaters on April 5, 2019.
