‘Shazam!’ Star Zachary Levi Explains Comparisons To Tom Hanks’ ‘Big’

During an interview with Deadline, Shazam! star Zachary Levi explained his comparison between the DC film and the Tom Hanks 80s comedy Big.

The first trailer for DC’s Shazam! indicated that the film will offer a lighter tone than previous DC films and audiences even compared the superhero feature to Tom Hank’s classic comedy big. During his panel at New York Comic Con, lead stat Zachary Levi noted that the DC film will feel like a cross between Big and Superman because it will be young in nature:

“It’s Big meets Superman. There’s levity built into it … It’s not that it skews younger. It just happens to have ‘younger’ in its nature.”

Later, Zachary Levi compared the feeling of watching the San Diego Comic-Con footage to his experience watching The Goonies and assured fans that he will do his utmost to deliver a performance worthy of the DC hero:

“That can lead to a lot of passion in a negative way, but I’m going to do my best.”

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Ron Cephas.

Shazam! will be released in theaters on April 5, 2019.
