‘Shazam!’ Remains King Of The Box Office While ‘Hellboy’ Disappoints

Zachary Levi’s Shazam! remained the king of the box office this past weekend edging out Universal’s Little and Lionsgate’s latest Hellboy reboot.

The number one movie in America is still Zachary Levi’s Shazam!, raking in another $25 Million in its second weekend of release. This brings the superhero’s total to $94 Million in North America alone. Although the film did take over a 50% dip in the box office from its opening numbers it also remained supreme overseas, bringing it’s global total to $258 Million.

Unfortunately for Lionsgate, their latest reboot of the fan favorite character Hellboy failed to bring the thunder the studio was expecting. Hellboy managed to bring in $12 Million domestically along with $10 Million overseas. The film’s critic and fan ratings were also very disappointing. Hellboy currently sits at an incredibly low 15% on Rotten Tomatoes while holding a C Cinemascore. Its experiments like these that beg the question: how late is too late to reboot a franchise? Granted the last time we saw Hellboy was in 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army.

Do you think Shazam! can keep it’s number one spot for three weeks in a row? What did you think of Hellboy? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Djimon Hounsou.

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

Shazam! is playing in theaters today!
