‘Shazam!’ Star Mark Strong On Sivana Being The Nemesis Of A 14-Year Old

During our on-set interview, Shazam! star Mark Strong shared his thoughts on Doctor Sivana being the nemesis of a 14-year old boy in the film.

While many DC fans thought Black Adam would serve as the main antagonist when Shazam! was announced, Strong’s Sivana will actually serve the villain role in the upcoming film. It seems Shazam! will explore Sivana’s backstory in detail with the latest TV spot featuring a young Sivana. Heroic Hollywood had the chance to visit the Shazam! set in April, where we asked Strong what if felt like to be the nemesis of 14-year old Billy Batson:

“He can’t understand. He can’t understand that the Wizard has chosen this boy as his champion. Because there was the opportunity there that he could be the champion of good but was rejected because he was considered not to be worthy. Yet, the wizard’s chosen a boy and he realizes that obviously that boy manifests himself into the man.. the Zachary version of Shazam, and to him it’s a source of total incomprehension why this boy should have been chosen over him. But, it just justifies him in his quest to unify the good force and the evil force and be in control of all of it.”

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Ron Cephas.

Shazam! will be released in theaters on April 5, 2019.
