Shazam! Producer On Why They May Have To Move Fast On A Sequel

Warner Bros. and DC’s newest superhero Shazam! has finally arrived in theaters and the film’s producer has revealed why they may need to move quickly to develop a sequel!

Warner Bros. and DC have taken many great strides recently beginning with Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, followed by Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and now with their most recent film Shazam! starring Zachary Levi. Although the studio hasn’t quite had the success with their team-up films compared to their “rivals” over at Marvel Studios, Warner Bros. looks to be getting into a rhythm with their stand-alone films.

Shazam! is a different sort of DCEU film because the film’s antagonist is a 14-year-old kid who inherits the power of the Gods, which is opposite of their past films where the heroes are older and matured by tragic pasts. A natural concern for any studio when working with children on a project is their ability to grow. They are constantly growing and if Warner Bros. wants to strike while the iron is hot, it warrants starting work on a Shazam! sequel sooner rather than later.

Shazam! producer Peter Safran recently sat down with Collider to speak about this occurrence and said this about working with young actors and the studio’s plans for a follow-up film:

“They’re going to look like Zach does today. So we’ve got to move quickly with the sequel, for sure.”

What worked the most about Shazam! was Asher Angel’s acting as Billy Batson who’s 16-years-old already and the studio would not want to wait for him to reach adulthood 2 to 3 years from now to begin work on a sequel.

Do you think Warner Bros. should push a sequel to Shazam! right away? Let us know what you think in the comment section below!

Here is the synopsis for DC’s next film, Zachary Levi’s Shazam!:

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).

Directed by David F. Sandberg, DC Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Ron Cephas.

Zachary Levi’s Shazam! is in theaters now. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the future of the current DC cinematic universe as we learn it.
