Past Meets Present In Fan-Made Retro ‘Shazam!’ Trailer

Sometimes the internet can be a glorious place. Such was the case when some selfless digital wizard gracefully bestowed superhero fandom with a magnificent retro Shazam! trailer.

YouTuber Darth Blender craftily combined footage from some of the oldest live-action superhero media with the audio from the Shazam! trailer to create a joyful old-timey mashup. The footage in reference is from an old television show called The Adventures of Captain Marvel. If you are currently cocking your head in confusion allow me to clear that up for you.

Back in 1941, when the television show aired, the character we now know today as Shazam was actually named Captain Marvel. As you can imagine, that landed DC Comics smack dab in the middle of a considerably lengthy copyright dispute with their competitor, Marvel, and when DC launched The New 52 in 2011, they simply changed Captain Marvel’s name to “Shazam,” which is the word young Billy Batson has always used to transform into his superpowered alter-ego.

Here is a plot synopsis for Shazam!:

“We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).”

Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Asher Angel, Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Faithe Herman, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans and Djimon Hounsou.

The film will hit theaters next year on April 5, 2019.
