David F. Sandberg’s superhero flick has already received wide praise from fans and critics alike. The film is currently sitting at a 92% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, the film seems to be making a splash on the box office end as well with a solid preview night opening of $5.9 million. And that’s on top of the $3 million it already made from the special Fandango screenings two weeks ago.
The film follows an orphaned Billy Batson (Asher Angel) bouncing from foster home to foster home in search of his birth mother. Along the way, he gets a slew of super powers from a mysterious wizard named Shazam. The film is really striking a chord with fans as it hits home with the emotional beats in the family. At its core, Shazam! is a movie about family and it breathes new life into the DC films.
Captain Sparkle Fingers is tracking well for his opening weekend at the North American box office. Shazam is expected to make between $45-$50 million this weekend. With the success of Aquaman and Shazam!, it seems that the DC Extended Universe is in a much better place than it was after the botched release of Justice League in 2017.
Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Ron Cephas Jones. Here is the plot synopsis for Shazam!:
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).
Shazam is now playing in theaters!
