The DCEU began with 2013’s Man of Steel where Earth was introduced to Henry Cavill’s Clark Kent also known as Superman. Since then the world has been introduced to Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, and Cyborg.
Now, the newest superhero on the block is named Shazam! and he believes he can stand toe-to-toe with DC’s flagship hero and he hopes it happens sooner rather than later.
Zachary Levi who plays Billy Batson’s super alter ego Shazam is just what the DCEU ordered. The self-proclaimed “man child” did an interview with MTV News during a behind the scenes shoot and expressed his gratitude to play the superhero role as well as his interest to one day fight Henry Cavill’s Superman.
“I’m pretty proud to play maybe the only character in all of comic book lore, anything in the DCEU… who could legitimately beat Superman and I’m looking forward to one day maybe getting to fight Henry Cavill. I think that would be freakin’ awesome.”
The last time we saw Henry Cavill’s Superman go up against a fellow crime fighter was in 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, the altercation did not end in the two becoming enemies. On the contrary, it began the unification of the Justice League.
Zachary Levi’s Shazam! opened in theaters last Friday with over $53 Million at the box office and has received much praise from fans and critics alike. Warner Bros. originally wanted Henry Cavill to reprise his role as Superman for a brief cameo in the film that would have seen him deliver only two lines. Unfortunately, Henry Cavill was not able to reach an agreement with the studio for the cameo and walked away negotiations to return. While Warners still managed to include the Henry Cavill version of Superman in the film, we did not actually see Henry Cavill’s face.
Do you agree with Zachary Levi? Would you like to see Shazam! and Henry Cavill’s Superman have a brief sparring session? Or would you rather see Henry Cavill return for a Man of Steel sequel? Sound off in the comment section below!
Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Ron Cephas Jones. Here is the plot synopsis for Shazam!:
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).
Shazam! is now playing in theaters!
