Hugh Jackman will be donning his adamantium claws one last time after nearly 17 years in the upcoming Wolverine film directed by James Mangold. Just recently, an photo was shared on Instagram that production has already kicked on in New Orleans on the upcoming film, and during press day in London, Steve “Frosty” Weintraub of Collider interviewed producer Simon Kinberg about the upcoming film.
It’s exciting. It’s a very different, radical, bold, different ‘Wolverine’ than anything you’ve seen in these movies.
In response to rumors about Patrick Stewart joining the film to reprise his role as Professor Xavier, Kinberg remained coy. However, he did discuss what audiences may expect in Mangold’s upcoming film.
I’m not sure what I’m allowed to say about that. I agree with you that Patrick Stewart was rumored to be in that film. It takes place in the future, and as you and others have reported, it is an R-rated movie. It’s violent, it’s kind of like a western in its tone. It’s just a very cool, different film.”
So after reports from a while back following the success of Deadpool, it looks like Jackman’s final adventure in his saga since his debut in Bryan Singer’s X-Men in 2000 will be taken to the next level with this confirmation of an R-rated film. Also, Kinberg’s comments about the film’s setting in the future gives us a tease of the X-Men timeline that we see following the events of Days of Future Past. The prospect of this film being kind of like a western in its tone is undoubtedly intriguing, and knowing that Mangold previously directed a western, 3:10 to Yuma starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale, it’d be wonderful to see the director apply those filmmaking sensibilities from that particular film and implement them within this upcoming Wolverine story.
Directed by James Mangold and starring Hugh Jackman, Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, Eriq La Salle & Elise Neal the upcoming Wolverine sequel hits theaters May 3, 2017.
