Simon Pegg Misses George Lucas’ Influence In New ‘Star Wars’ Films

It’s not uncommon for an actor to have a negative opinion of a project they’ve been apart of, in particular when they’re no longer starring in it. Yes, while Simon Pegg may have more prominence in the recent Star Trek films, don’t forget that he was also in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and today, this is about how Pegg feels that there’s something that’s been missing in recent Star Wars films.

While on The Adam Buxton Podcast — Buxton himself is the co-creator of Hot Fuzz, which Pegg starred in — Simon Pegg revealed that there was a noticeable difference when he walked out of The Last Jedi compared to the prior Star Wars films before Disney took over:

“I must admit, watching the last Star Wars film, the overriding feeling I got when I came out was, ‘I miss George Lucas. For all the complaining that I’d done about him in the prequels, there was something amazing about his imagination. I do feel like his voice is missing from the current ones.”

Indeed, at least among fandom, there seems to be a certain level of nostalgia for George Lucas’ voice and influence in the recent crop of Star Wars films, even if there are many who still may not be fond of the prequels. But since The Force Awakens and especially The Last Jedi, there’s been a growing divide among those in the Star Wars fandom who find themselves split on the direction that Disney has taken the franchise in as of recent. However, with J.J. Abrams returning to direct Episode IX, could there be a return to form?

And since Abrams has worked with Pegg before on the first of the new Star Trek films, makes you wonder how Abrams might react to how Simon Pegg feels about the direction that the new Star Wars films have taken. What do you make of Pegg’s words about the franchise’s direction thus far? Let us know in the comments below.

Star Wars: Episode IX will be released on December 20, 2019.
