Skydance Media Is Planning A Major ‘Terminator’ Announcement In 2017

While we recently heard a rumor that Paramount had given up on the Terminator franchise after Genisys underperformed, word from Skydance Media honcho David Ellison suggests that there might be plans for a new one after all. Don’t expect it to be a continuation of the Genisys continuity, though.

In an interview with Collider, Ellison commented that there’s a clear desire within Skydance to do right by the franchise, and that they hope that this new announcement resonates with the fans.

“I will say we have resolved the future of the [Terminator] franchise and believe me its an incredibly bright future. I think where it’s going will be the continuation of what the fans really wanted since Terminator 2: Judgment Day. We have something this year that we will be announcing for the franchise. It’s something we’re incredibly excited about and we think is the direction it needs to head.”

It doesn’t seem completely likely that Skydance would be petty enough to try to make an ash-can movie to keep the rights from reverting back to James Cameron, who intends to produce a new movie in the series with Tim Miller directing, but the possibility is still there – and that might scare Terminator fans more than the threat of Judgment Day ever could. Hopefully, this surprise announcement that they’re teasing will be that they’ll be producing the aforementioned Miller/Cameron project instead of trying to do another reboot on their own. In any case, it’s unlikely that they’re going to continue with the Genisys timeline, which is just as well considering that the movie is pretty self-contained and was pretty contentious with the fanbase.
