John Boyega shared a new image from the set of the film on Twitter today, saying that he’s back on set to film “something special” for the sequel. Here is the tweet from Boyega:
Now, what immediately comes to mind in situations like this is that it sounds like Boyega could be filming a post-credits scene of some kind, perhaps one setting up another sequel in the series. While the first Pacific Rim didn’t crush it at the domestic box office, it did well enough overseas to warrant this sequel. If Pacific Rim: Uprising can pull off similar numbers worldwide, we could potentially be looking at a trilogy.
I, for one, would be all for that idea. These types of giant monsters and robots movies are right up my alley (with the glaring exception of Michael Bay’s Transformers franchise). I loved the hell out of the first Pacific Rim, and while I’m a bit disappointed that the film’s director Guillermo Del Toro and stars Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba did not stay on board for the sequel, I’m really looking forward to seeing what director Steven S. DeKnight, Boyega and the rest of the cast do with this next film, and perhaps even more sequels to come.
Pacific Rim: Uprising is directed by Steven S. DeKnight and stars series newcomers John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Scott Eastwood (Suicide Squad), Tian Jing (Kong: Skull Island), Nick E. Tarabay (Spartacus, Arrow), Levi Meaden (The Killing, The 100) and Adria Arjona (Emerald City), along with returning stars Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman.
Pacific Rim: Uprising hits theaters on February 23, 2018.
