The Sonic the Hedgehog fanbase was left divided yesterday after Hamagami / Carroll, Inc. published the film’s style guide online, revealing the first full look at the blue hedgehog as he’ll appear in his upcoming live-action film. Even Sonic the Hedgehog creator Yuji Naka revealed he had his own issues with the SEGA character’s translation to the big screen.
IGN’s Deputy Reviews Editor and Sonic fan Tom Marks took it upon himself to address what was arguably one of the biggest criticisms against the film’s design amongst fans and give the hedgehog his signature eyes as they appear in video game form. Check it out below!
So what do you think? Is this a better take on Sonic’s live-action design? Are you excited to see the classic video game character in his own live-action feature film? Let us know in the comments below!
An official synopsis has yet to be released, however, the Sonic the Hedgehog film will follow Small-town sheriff Tom Wachowski and Sonic as they embark on a road trip to San Francisco in a race to recover the blue hedgehog’s rings before the villainous Dr. Robotnik.
Westworld actor James Marsden stars in the film along with Ben Schwartz who provides the voice for the film’s Sonic. The first official look at Jim Carrey in the role of Dr. Robotnik has yet to be revealed, however, the actor has assured fans his take on the antagonist will be live-action, rather than a CGI version of the video game character like the titular Hedgehog.
Directed by Jeff Fowler from a script written by Patrick Casey, Josh Miller, and Oren Uziel, Sonic the Hedgehog features the voices talent of Ben Schwartz as the titular character and stars James Marsden as sheriff Tom Wachowski, Tika Sumpter as Mrs. Wachowski, Lee Majdoub as Stone, Frank C. Turner as Crazy Carl, and Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo Robotnik. Adam Pally, Natasha Rothwell, Neal McDonough, Debs Howard, and Elfina Luk also star in undisclosed roles. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice composer Tom Holkenborg, a.k.a. Junkie XL will score the film.
Sonic the Hedgehog is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 8, 2019.
