The on-set secrecy of Avengers: Infinity War was so comprehensive that not even Spider-Man's actor knew who he was sparring against.
While at the ACE Comic Con, Holland mentioned that he never got to see the full script of Avengers: Infinity War while he was filming, but he also shared that he wasn’t made aware of some of the characters Spider-Man is set to fight in the new movie. Holland explained that he was acting in the dark, fighting against someone who would be replaced by some sort of CGI alien or monster in post-production:
“I remember for Avengers, the Russo Brothers are like ‘so you’re just standing here, and you’re fighting this guy and just do whatever’ and I’m like, ‘okay, who am I fighting?’ And they were like ‘well, we can’t tell you because it’s a secret.’ I’m like, ‘okay so what does he look like?’ And they’re like ‘well, we can’t tell you because that would give it away, so I’m like ‘how big is he?’ ‘Well, we can’t tell you because that would give it away.’ So, I’m just standing there punching the air for 15 minutes and when I took the job I didn’t think that’s what I’d be doing. I’ve gotten used to it now.”
As it stands, it’s likely that Spider-Man will fight with at least one of the four Children of Thanos, which are characters based on the Black Order introduced in the 2013 Marvel Comics crossover Infinity. The Children — whose ranks include Cull Obsidian, Proxima Midnight, Ebony Maw, and Corvus Glaive — serve as a task force that either help Thanos obtain the Infinity Stones or to distract Earth’s Mightiest Heroes while he does so himself. A fifth member of this team exists in the comics, but was adapted out for the time being in order to make sure that the already-ambitious film wasn’t overstuffed.
But in any case, it’s not hard to feel at least a little bad for Holland — acting without a clear idea of what you’re supposed to be doing is difficult to pull off well. Even still, that he claims he got used to it likely means that it probably wasn’t too hard, especially since he’s only one player in a massive ensemble film.
Avengers: Infinity War will be released on May 4, 2018, and has a cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautisa, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Rudd, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Hiroyuki Sanada, Winston Duke, Tom Hiddleston, Tessa Thompson, Benicio Del Toro, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, and Josh Brolin. Here’s the official synopsis:
As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.
The currently-untitled Avengers 4 features a cast made up of many of the key players in Infinity War — alongside newcomers like Brie Larson and Evangeline Lilly — and is scheduled to hit theaters on May 3, 2019.
