‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Nearly Had 2 More ‘Avengers’ Cameos

Concept art for Spider-Man: Homecoming has revealed that Spider-Man himself would have been reunited with a pair of Avengers that he fought alongside in Captain America: Civil War. Iron Man and the two other characters would have aided the young hero during the ferry sequence before it was revised to just being Iron Man coming to the young hero’s aid.

Two pieces of concept art expand upon the movie’s Ferry sequence. Spider-Man was 98% successful in stopping the ferry from collapsing before things turned south (fittingly showing the recurring theme of how awful Peter’s luck is), which highlighted that he’s a competent enough superhero on his own. And then having Iron Man coming to save the day at Spidey’s darkest hour illustrated that the high school hero still has a way to go to becoming the best superhero that he can possibly be. As it turned out, two other Avengers were originally planned to help Iron Man and Spider-Man keep the ferry from collapsing: War Machine and the Vision.

I’ll be honest – while this would’ve been pretty cool, I think it also would have distracted from this movie’s status as a Spider-Man standalone and would have diluted the narrative from Peter’s own heroics. Including more characters in the Ferry sequence really would have taken away from the fact that a still-learning Spider-Man almost managed to save the day on his own, or the fact that his idol Iron Man was able to handle the rest. That being said, I don’t think anyone would have minded if we had seen Vision and War Machine appeared at Stark’s conference at the end of the film – and in any case, War Machine does appear in Peter’s video diary. (Or is it a war diary?)

Spider-Man: Homecoming is playing in theaters.
