Two iconic characters will appear in the upcoming film. One of them is Flash Thompson, who was originally portrayed by Joe Manganiello in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man series and Chris Zylka in Marc Webb’s Amazing Spider-Man films. This time, actor Tony Revolori (The Grand Budapest Hotel and Dope) will portray Peter’s bully.
Many fans were caught by surprise when it was revealed that Revolori would be playing Flash, who is usually depicted as a traditional jock-type of bully. However, the modern high school adversary isn’t really the big athlete on campus anymore but rather a different dynamic than traditionally seen in media (think Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s 21 Jump Street).
In an interview with Short List Magazine, Holland expressed that the dynamic between Peter and Flash would reflect a different adversarial role compared to the previous two incarnations:
American high schools are so different to British ones. Bullying wasn’t really a thing, so when they cast Flash Thompson they knew they didn’t need a 6ft 5in jock to beat Peter Parker up. They needed a rich, smug kid commenting on how bad his trainers were. And I did it to practice my American accent.
Holland also sang the praises of his on-screen antagonist, Vulture (portrayed by Oscar-nominee Michael Keaton). He even revealed a hilarious moment on set that would leave many fanboys with a huge grin on their face:
Pretty cool. He’s a badass. We have a fight in the movie and I punch him. He turns around and says [in a deep voice], ‘I’m Batman.’ He kept doing Batman quotes on set.
Right from the first trailer, it looks like this new film will explore new areas we have yet to see in any previous Spidey flick. Sure, we have seen Peter in high school, but not to the extent that this film will. As cool as the action seems to be, I am honestly looking forward to the John Hughes-style elements the most.
