‘Spider-Man’ Director Talks Why Spidey Won’t Have Spider Sense

'Spider-Man: Homecoming' director Jon Watts explains why the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Spidey will not have his spider sense.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be the titular hero’s first standalone film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but audiences have already been introduced to two live-action versions of the wall crawler in the past. In order to bring a fresh take on the web slinger, a number of new elements will added to the latest version of the classic Marvel Comics hero, including an alteration to his power set. In an interview with CinemaBlend, director Jon Watts explained why the MCU version of Spider-Man will not have his traditional spider sense ability.

Watts offered a reason for the exclusion of Spidey’s signature power, but hinted that it could return in the future:

“I feel like we have seen a lot of Spider Sense in the previous films, so we didn’t really lean into that as hard as they have in the previous films. But I do think it is a really interesting thing to explore.”

Are you disappointed to hear that Spidey will be missing one of his key powers in the MCU? Share your thoughts below!

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

Directed by Jon Watts, the film stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Tyne Daly, Bokeem Woodbine, Michael Chernus, Kenneth Choi, Hannibal Buress, Martin Starr, Michael Barbieri, Angourie Rice, Abraham Attah, Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr.

Spider-Man: Homecoming will be released in theaters on July 7, 2017.
