‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’: The Writers Only Had 3 Days To Write A Pitch…

The screenwriters for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and admitted that they had just three days to write a pitch and present it to Marvel.

Daley says they didn’t have the luxury to be “nervous” when they were that pressed for time.

“There was no time to be nervous really. We had such a ticking clock in getting this thing made and also in pitching it.”

Asked why they believe Marvel went with their pitch over someone else’s, Goldstein admitted he thinks it was the humor in their script that won out.

“I think it was the combination of the humor of it, along with the relatability, that we told a high school story that happened to have superpowers. I think that’s something everybody can relate to. Just because you get superpowers, doesn’t mean you become an adult or sophisticated or can get the girl.”

Thankfully, it all worked out. Goldstein and Daley also wrote the script for Horrible Bosses and so they’re not strangers to the world of comedy, which Spider-Man: Homecoming had in spades. The humor in the film is quite clearly one of the highlights.

Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, young Peter Parker returns home to live with his Aunt May. Under the watchful eye of mentor Tony Stark, Parker starts to embrace his newfound identity as Spider-Man. He also tries to return to his normal daily routine — distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just a friendly neighborhood superhero. Peter must soon put his powers to the test when the evil Vulture emerges to threaten everything that he holds dear.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is currently playing in theaters.
