‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ Was Actually Inspired By This Video Game

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse just won Best Animated Feature at the 91st annual Academy Awards Sunday evening. Naturally, this win has put the groundbreaking film back into the forefronts of moviegoers minds. Marvel writer Dan Slott has taken the opportunity to divulge the secret origin of the Oscar-winning film.

Via his personal Twitter account, Dan Slott started an all-consuming thread where he discloses exactly how Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse went from a simple idea to a feature film worthy of Hollywood’s most prestigious recognition. The story begins, as most stories do, with a phone call from a video game developer called Beenox in 2009. They wanted to fly Slott and his storied Marvel knowledge out to Quebec to get his input on a project called Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. It was an ambitious game featuring multiple iterations of the Spider-Man character from the comics.

Slott obliged and after his playtest, he called his editor:

“Told him the game looked GREAT and that we should do this story in the comics, but one up them, make it BIGGER and do something they couldn’t do, have all the Spideys interact, and use EVERY SPIDER-MAN EVER!”

This is the moment the seed for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was planted. Then, according to Slott, the idea grew after Brian Michael Bendis pitched a comics story that partnered up Peter Parker with Miles Morales. Over the next couple of years, the idea of a so-called “Spider-Verse” took various forms through many mediums, including a comic book event, a toy line, and a cartoon.

It was inevitable that some variant of a Spider-Man Spider-Verse would become a feature film. And boy is Dan Slott glad it did:

“But nothing will ever top that there’s a Spider-Verse movie now– an nominated movie, that’s my favorite Spider-Man movie ever!”

Dan tells the story in more detail with his tweets, which you can check out below:
