Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opened in a time where a lot of big-budget films were premiering. It opened the same weekend as Mortal Engines and the week directly after its premiere saw films like Bumblebee, Mary Poppins Returns, and the box office juggernaut Aquaman debut in theaters. Despite the competition, and thanks to incredibly positive word-of-mouth from fans and critics alike, Sony’s first animated Marvel film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse kept going strong at the box office for months.
This evening during the 2019 Oscars ceremony, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse won the highly coveted award for Best Animated Feature of 2019. The film was against two of Disney’s critically-acclaimed box office hits from last year, Ralph Breaks the Internet and the long-awaited superhero sequel Incredibles 2. Despite the tough competition, the dimension-clashing animated Marvel adventure came out on top.
Although another addition to the Spider-Verse franchise isn’t hitting theaters this year, fans will be able to see the return of Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe films Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home. Before fans can return to the current state of the MCU, they’ll get to experience a nineties-set origin story thanks to next month’s Captain Marvel, which will prepare fans for Brie Larson’s titular hero appearing in Avengers: Endgame.
